01What Circles is

Circles is a support platform built around live, audio-only, drop-in group sessions. Sessions run daily and are led by a mix of licensed professionals, certified coaches, and peer leaders; you join muted, and you can raise a hand to speak or stay and listen for the whole session. It runs on iOS, Android, and the web, and it is open to adults of any gender, 18 and over.

Its current emphasis is narcissistic abuse recovery: that is the language Circles leads with on its own site, with divorce and breakup support as a named vertical served by dedicated pages. On scale, Circles reports more than 160,000 members; that figure is its own, and we pass it along as such.

Circles frames itself as group support, not a substitute for therapy. That framing is honest, and it is the same line Steel Magnolias holds about itself.

02What Steel Magnolias is

Steel Magnolias is a private, pseudonymous community app for women navigating divorce. It is on the App Store and Google Play today. It began as a community: about 150 women meeting in group chats, on weekly Zoom calls, and in person, with a Discord server, all before the app existed.

The community happens mostly in writing, under a pseudonym you choose. Gardens is the live community chat, part of full membership, with The Oasis, topic chats, and direct messages. Meadows are live audio rooms, guided by Magnolia Guide, a gentle AI host. Roots is the community forum, free to read and free to post. Receipts is a private documentation tool: dated entries in your own words, with voice notes transcribed after you consent the first time you use them and the audio deleted after transcription. What you keep there is yours, not part of the community. Crisis tools are free and never paywalled.

The safety posture is specific: pseudonyms by default, screen-capture shielding, an optional app lock, and on-device safety architecture designed for women whose devices may not be safe. We never claim to be abuser-proof; we claim to take the threat model seriously.

03How they differ

Set side by side, the differences are structural rather than cosmetic. Neither is a copy of the other. Stated as facts, one at a time:

• Format. Circles is built around scheduled live audio sessions that begin and end. Steel Magnolias is text-first: chat and forum you can enter at any hour, where the conversation is still there when you come back, with Meadows, live audio rooms, alongside. That difference is about hours as much as taste. A live session has a start time. A written thread holds what you said at two in the morning and is still holding it when you come back to it.
• Who it serves. Circles is open to adults of any gender. Steel Magnolias is for women only. Neither choice is a criticism of the other; they are different rooms, built for different reasons.
• Facilitation.Circles sessions are led by professional and peer session leaders. Steel Magnolias is a peer community with moderation; its live audio rooms, Meadows, are guided by Magnolia Guide, a gentle AI host, not a professional session leader. Moderation holds the community's rules; it does not run a program or set an agenda.
• Identity. Both let you keep your legal name out of it. Steel Magnolias is pseudonym-first by design: you choose a name, and that name is what other members see. Day to day, that means the name on your posts, your messages, and your profile is a name you picked, not one you were given, and the screen-capture shielding and optional app lock exist in service of the same design.
• Emphasis.Narcissistic abuse recovery is Circles' lead vertical, with divorce beside it. Divorce, especially high-conflict divorce, is the whole Steel Magnolias product.

04What each costs

Circles pricing depends on plan and promotion: from about $15 to $29 per month, with a 7-day free trial. No free plan is advertised on its site.

Steel Magnolias pricing is simpler to state, because it is ours. Roots (the community forum) and crisis tools are free. Full membership is $129/year or $14.99/month. The first 500 member spots carry a launch price of $59.99 for the first year, then $129/year, on iPhone; the live counter on the home page shows how many spots remain. On the App Store and Google Play today. No ads, no data sale, ever. Full membership is what opens Gardens, the live community chat; Roots and the crisis tools never sit behind it.

One line deserves its own sentence: the community forum and crisis resources are free for every member, subscriber or not, and always will be. 05Which fits whom

Circles may fit someone who wants scheduled, facilitator-led live audio and does not need a women-only space. If speaking out loud in a live group, with a session leader guiding it, is how you process, that is a real reason to choose it, and nothing on this page should talk you out of it.

Steel Magnolias is built for a woman who wants a pseudonymous, women-only, text-first community with private documentation alongside it. If you write to think, keep odd hours, or need your legal name kept out of every room you are in, that is the shape this app was built for.
